JONATHAN4
TIPTON III (JONATHON3,
JONATHON2,
EDWARD1) was born 1750 in Frederick County, VA, and died
January 18, 1833 in Overton County, TN. He
married (1) KEZIEH
ROBERTSON SEVIER.
She was born 1753, and died Bet. 1800 - 1806. He married (2) FRANCES PERLINA DAUGHERTY 1770,
daughter of JOHN
DAUGHERTY. He
married (3) LAVINIA STEPHENS 1813.
Notes for JONATHAN TIPTON III: Jonathon Tipton III was a Major in the Revolutionary War and fought 13 battles under George Washington. He was wounded in the battle of Kings Mountain where he was 2nd in command. He was also with George Washington at Valley Forge. "Jonathon
Tipton was born in Frederick County, Virginia, in 1750.
Early settling in what became Washington County, East Tennessee, he was,
in February 1777, made a Major, and was engaged in guarding the frontiers: and
in 1780, had a fight with Inidans at the mouth of Flat Creek, on Nolachucky.
He was second in command of Seviers regiment at Kings Mountain; and then
served on Arthur Campbell's campaign, leading a detachment against Telassee and
Chilhowee. In the fall of 1781, he
went on service with Colonels Shelby and Sevier under General Greene, in South
Carolina. Major Tipton died in
Overton County, TN, January Eighteenth, 1833, in his eighty-third year (Lyman
Draper, Kings Mountain and its Heroes). Notes for KEZIEH ROBERTSON SEVIER: Robert Sevier married Kesiah Robertson, who was born in 1753 and died between 1800 and 1806. She was the daughter of Col. Charles Robertson ("Black Charles") and Susanna Cunningham. Kesiah is said to have later married Major Jonathan Tipton, and moved to Buncombe County about 1800. The reference to her as Kesiah Sevier in the 1798 will of her father raises the possibility that her marriage to Tipton may have occurred considerably later than usually assumed. Lavina Stephens Tipton's pension application stated that she married Maj. Jonathan Tipton in Buncombe County about 1813. This was after Kesiah's death.
