I don't have proof that this was the father of Martha Lucy Rankin, but all the
evidence points that way. According to LDS, John F.
Rankin born in 1854. The 1870
census shows John F. at 14 years of age (therefore born 1856).
Tabitha Rankin was widowed by 1880 census - six year old Lucy living with
family. John and Hettie were
divorced sometime before 1880. According to Aunt Lucille's genealogy notes, Hettie shot
John because he cheated on her (need to verify).
It is possible that John Rankin remarried, as suggested by the following
